Car Servicing guide
What Does a Full Car Service Include?
A practical guide to interim, full, major and manufacturer servicing, what garages commonly check, what may cost extra and why the service schedule matters.
Find car servicing in SouthportThere is no legally defined universal checklist that every garage must call a “full service”. Different providers include different numbers of checks and replacement items, while the vehicle manufacturer may specify its own schedule based on time, mileage and engine type.
That means the useful question is not just how much is a full service? It is what exactly is included for my car?
Interim, full, major and manufacturer servicing
| Service type | Typical purpose | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Interim | A lighter maintenance visit between more comprehensive services, often useful for high-mileage use. | Oil/filter change, safety checks and fluid checks included. |
| Full | A broader annual-style inspection and maintenance service. | Which filters, checks and diagnostic procedures are included. |
| Major | A more extensive service that may include longer-interval replacement items. | Spark plugs, filters, fluids or belts may be additional depending on vehicle schedule. |
| Manufacturer | Work carried out to the maker’s specified service schedule. | Correct parts, fluids, service actions and digital/service-book updates. |
What is commonly included in a full car service?
A typical full service can include engine oil and oil-filter replacement along with checks of the brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, battery, cooling system, lights, wipers, fluid levels, exhaust and visible leaks. Many providers also include an air filter and a diagnostic scan, but those are not universal.
The service checklist should reflect the vehicle. A diesel, petrol, hybrid and electric car do not all require the same maintenance items.
Engine oil and filter
Oil specification matters as much as quantity. Modern engines can require a particular viscosity and manufacturer approval, especially where turbochargers, variable valve timing or diesel particulate filters are involved. Ask whether the quote includes the correct specification of oil rather than simply “oil change”.
The oil filter is normally replaced at the same time. If the engine is losing oil or the level has changed unexpectedly, tell the garage rather than treating the service as a simple top-up exercise.
Air, fuel and cabin filters
A full service may include the engine air filter, while fuel filters and cabin/pollen filters often follow different replacement intervals. A major or manufacturer service may include them when due.
A blocked cabin filter affects ventilation and demisting rather than engine performance, but it can still make the car unpleasant to use. A clogged engine air filter can restrict airflow and affect efficiency or performance.
Brakes
Servicing normally includes inspection rather than automatic replacement. The garage may assess pad thickness, disc condition, visible hydraulic components and fluid level. If wear is found, any replacement work should be quoted separately unless you have already authorised it.
If your brakes are already making noise or the pedal feels different, do not wait for routine servicing. Read our guide to squealing and grinding brakes.
Tyres
A service can include tyre-pressure and condition checks, looking at tread, uneven wear and visible damage. Uneven wear can point to alignment, suspension or inflation issues rather than simply “needing tyres”.
Steering and suspension
Technicians may inspect visible joints, bushes, springs, dampers and steering components for wear, damage or leaks. Knocks, clunks, uneven tyre wear or steering that no longer tracks normally are useful symptoms to mention before the service.
Battery and charging system
A battery can appear fine until colder weather or repeated short journeys expose reduced capacity. Many service schedules include a battery-condition or charging-system check. If the car has been slow to start, say so when booking — it may justify more detailed testing than the standard checklist.
Cooling system and fluids
Coolant, brake fluid, washer fluid and other service fluids are checked according to the vehicle design. Some fluids have defined replacement intervals; others are topped up only if appropriate. Automatic gearbox oil, differential oil and specialist hydraulic fluids are often not part of a generic full service unless specifically included.
Diagnostics and service-light reset
Some garages include an electronic diagnostic scan and service-indicator reset. Others only reset the service reminder once the scheduled maintenance has been completed. A scan is useful for stored fault information, but it is not the same as investigating an active warning-light problem.
What is usually not automatically included?
- Brake pads, discs or tyres that are found to be worn.
- Timing belt or timing chain work.
- Automatic transmission servicing.
- Air-conditioning regas.
- Clutch replacement.
- Diagnostic labour to investigate a specific fault.
- Major suspension or steering repairs.
- Long-interval spark plugs, filters or fluids unless specified.
Compare the checklist, not just the headline price. Two garages can both advertise a “full service” while including different filters, fluids, inspections and diagnostic work.
How often should a car be serviced?
The manufacturer’s schedule should be the starting point. Some cars use fixed mileage/time intervals; others calculate service timing based on use. High annual mileage, repeated short journeys, towing or severe operating conditions can affect maintenance needs.
Do not assume the common phrase “once a year” applies to every service item. Long-interval items such as timing belts, spark plugs or certain fluids have their own schedules.
Does a service replace an MOT?
No. Servicing is preventative maintenance. The MOT is a statutory inspection against minimum road-safety and environmental standards. A service can identify problems before an MOT, but neither process replaces the other.
Can an independent garage maintain a manufacturer’s warranty?
Warranty and servicing requirements depend on the vehicle, agreement and type of warranty. If maintaining a manufacturer’s warranty matters, tell the garage before booking and confirm that the correct schedule, parts specifications, fluids and records will be used. Keep invoices and evidence of the work.
What should you ask before booking a full service?
- What exact checklist is included?
- Which filters are replaced rather than just inspected?
- What oil specification will be used?
- Is a diagnostic scan included?
- Are VAT, disposal and consumables included in the quoted price?
- Will the garage call before carrying out repairs beyond the service?
- Will the paper or digital service history be updated?
Frequently asked servicing questions
Is a major service always better than a full service?
Not automatically. The right service is the one that matches what the manufacturer says is due. Paying for a generic “major” package can still miss a vehicle-specific item if the schedule has not been checked.
Why is one garage’s full service much cheaper?
Labour rates differ, but the checklist can also be different. Compare what is replaced, what is inspected and whether the correct oil and filters are included.
Should I service a low-mileage car every year?
Low mileage does not stop oil, brake fluid, coolant, rubber components and batteries from ageing. Follow the manufacturer’s time-based schedule as well as mileage limits.
